Using the toolkit of jazz, Brussels based five-piece Black Flower create a serpentine mélange that is suspenseful, groovy, witching and hypnotic.
Their borderless approach defies all easy categorisation, but for those who need some type of frame, here is what journalists associated Black Flower with: psychedelia, Ethio-jazz, prog-rock, afrobeat, post bop on mescaline, hybrid jazz, dub,...
Triggered by the peculiar emotion Ethio-jazz scales provoke, Nathan Daems founded the band in 2013. His education was in jazz, but his creative mind was wired to the world. Debut album 'Abyssinia Afterlife' (2014) resonated internationally and ever since Black Flower has been challenging themselves, feeding from the musicianship and artistic input of every individual band member and from traditional and contemporary elements in music from over the world.
Each album they produce - five in total - received critical acclaim in both specific- and mainstream press throughout the world.
Black Flower regularly tours abroad and was officially selected by several showcase events such as Eurosonic (2015), WOMEX (2017), Roots & Hybrid (2019)
Quote from LaBestia:
"Damn, Black Flower goes deep! Every show we've been to was a true magical happening. Each-and-every-time! We've rarely seen a band pushing musical boundaries as much as Black Flower! And they always groove. That's why we adore them."
